Unfortunately, I don't have much time going to any English clubs in Youth House and my friends don't like speaking English with me khi8a ( the prefer chatchit-ing in VNese khi2h ] I think it would be nice if there were an English speaking group in Yeah1, so everyone could practise English and make friends khi1l

@ Iris : The first thing you could do to improve your writting skill is to write in a formal way ^_______^ It will be mammoth troubles when you write "ryting" instead of "writing" in tests such as TOEFL or SAT :D Bad habits are not easily changed ;)


@ Mimi : Big warm ;) Welcome here. Why don't you try to use some grammar books. I'm bad at grammar too T______________T I use "Advanced Grammar English in Use" ( Cambridge ), it helps. Try this ^^

I know KLan when we were in the same room in the local contest when we were in 5th grade ^^ lol, that was long long long time ago :&)

Well, when I waited in front of the room to be called in, I realised the room would be full of girls who were called "Lan" :&) That shocked :&) I had never been in the same room with so many "Lan" like that :&) ( At that time, in my own school, there were 2 "Lan" only ). So I started conversations with these girls. We talked like we had known each other for a long time :&)


Later, I met KLan again in our school LHP . I known that KLan was one of the girl in the "Lan's day" 4 years ago :&) Unfortunately, I found hard to start conversations with her ^^ I didn't know why. Maybe it's because we all were growing up and everything wasn't so easy like they had been before. So did she. She known me also but we just kept quite ^^


So funny to realise how easy things were when we were young :&)

okay, let chit chat chit chat :&) first, i need an advice from ya :p


as long as i study in A class, as long as i realise that this place is not for me :( at first, i chose this A class 'cause many people said that would be a lot of choices later and it would be easier with an A-student to change to a D class than with a D student to change to an A class ... I planned to change class last year but many d students - who was in D class - advised me not to do that '________" .


About my result, okay, I got the title HSG thanks to Literature "_____" See, it was my first semester's result : Math : 7.3, Phy : 8.2, Chem : 7.0, Lit : 8.1, Eng: 8.6, His : 9.7, Geo : 9.7, Bio : 9.0 ... '_________" There is no hope that I could pass the university's exam with such low scores like that


However, there are 2 things I hate about D class


_ Total students's number : 60 with only 8 boys !!!! ( well, A class has 40 students only. moreover, studying in a class full of girls is kinnda boring. where are the boys !!! )

_ English. Yeah, I hate english in school. i can't stand it. i can't spend time learning by heart some ... boring stuffs such as phrasal verbs, ... or something you only know how to do in test if you learn by heart '________" i hate that !!!

@Bé Lan:
First of all, I’d like to tell ya that u neednt change to any D class. U still can pass the exam in D section if u focus studying on D subjects. Well, when I see ur results, I bet that ur more suitable with D class.
The results cannot tell anything, abt ur real ability or the possibility to pass the uni entrance exam. U can choose to take exam on both A & D, y not? More choices, more chances 4 u.

One more thing abt English in high skul in general. Don’t be too strict with it. Cuz when I entered uni, I realized that the knowledge which I considered nonsense and “learn-by-heart” words have helped me a lot. U’d have no chance to study those things cuz u’ll have to concentrate on technical language. Grammar or Phrasal Verbs, word forms or sentence building is no longer needed.

But wat u get from high skul, esp in LHP is really precious. Believe me, cuz I used to be a student of that skul.

In my own words, study English is never useless. Knowledge of language is unlimited. U can be one’s teacher if u know much more than him. And I’ve praticed this in reality, and surprise, the result is totally exact ;)

In class, i never get 8, 9 or 10 in tests cause these tests are mainly about testing the ability to use "standard english", grammar and word-choices. However, when i toke the first sememester's test, i got a 10 , which had been scaredly thought about before by almost all the classmates =)) haha, there wasn't hard to explain, many parts of this final test were made in the same format with the toefl test =) it focused on testing the "critical" reading skills. that were i got my precious point haha


anyways, some parts are too silly, such as the phonology =)) damn it, in 10 questions assigned in test, 7 were done completely wrong by me =)) haha. why do I have to study that ?!! they are priceless, yeah, i can speak when i have nothing in mind about that stupid things while many friends of mine, who get high scores in this part can't even say a word =)) lol, so funny, isn't it


anyways, thank you so much :x . i can't wait til my graduation day !!! can't wait to go to college !!!

@ Bé Lan: Surely speaking and listening are the most necessary but dun remember to improve and solidify ur grammar. Believe me, its always vital in any cases. Solid Writing skill will help u make a gud impression on ur cover letter at the 1st time. Never stop learning new words and reviewing old ones :D English is juz sth u will bear in mind easily if u use almost everyday.
Phonology sucks. Some words in the test are completely wrong, simply because of the person who created the test lol =)) juz be sure that u pronounce in the right way, thats all ;)

I cant go far anywhere till I get to university :y:. It's very long to full tell :-< generally speaking, I'm cramming standardized tests (TOEFL iBT, SAT I & II), you know. May be I'll take a gap yr after finishing the exam to university. Many many exams to be worried :(. How can I get to US :&( ??? I daren't go on any vacations till I get a letter of acceptance from elite schools in US (include a grantship or a big scholarship, well that must be more than cool B-))

Well, I guess I'll share my story about high school here in the States.

Luckily, my school did not vote on uniforms so I'm not required to wear them. ^^

Uniforms:

I get to wear anything I want but it must obey the dress code. Skirts can’t be too short,
clothings can’t show undergarment, which means no see-through shirts, and no tube tops.
No cleavage should be shown either.

If your house is over 2 miles away from the school they you’re allowed to use the school bus for free. If not, you have to pay or get your parents you drive you to school and pick you up from school. The school will send you a bus pass in the mail and you have to show the bus driver so they allow you to go on the bus. You have to wake up early and get ready to wait at the bus stop. They require you to wait at the bus stop 45 minutes before the school starts.

At the beginning of the year I get a schedule of all my classes. I have 11 classes including lunch. They all go in order.


Homeroom - This is just a class where they check who’s in school and who’s absent. You also get papers to bring home to your parents to notify what events are currently going on in school.

Physical Science 1-1 - You learn the basic about science. You do basic labs and take notes.

History 9-H - I’m in 9th grade so I learn the history about the world. We learn about the great civilization of China, Japan, Rome, and Europe. It’s like an overview of middle school. Then we learn about World War I and II.

French 9-H - I chose to learn how to speak French but you’re allowed to choose other languages. In my school you can only choose French, Spanish, or Latin. Different schools have other choses.

GYM/Physical Education - To be honest, I’m not a very active person so I hate this class the most. In GYM, you’re required to change your clothes. You have to wear sneakers and you must take off all of your jewelries and put them in your gym locker including your clothes. In my school, we alternate from the small gym to the big every other day. The small gym is for running and the big gym is for games.

Health - Health and GYM run on a trimester. 1/3 of the year, instead of going to gym I go to health. In health you learn about your body and diseases. This is the class where you really learn how babies are made. @_@


English 1-1 – I love this class. By 9th grade they expect you to know how to read and write properly. So at this point, you’re assigned Vocabulary books to do so you can expand your vocabulary level.

For example instead of writing:
The dinner was good today.

You write:
Mom added her secret ingredient which made dinner exceptionally delicious this evening.


The also assign books that you have to read and discuss in class besides the occasional tests, quizzes, and not to mention the final and mid-term.

Algebra 1-1 – You learn math, ‘nough said. I hate this class. Math is just not my thing.

Lunch - My favorite class!!! Hahaha. xD At lunch you get to sit with anyone you want. It’s mixed with 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grade. At my school, we have 4 periods of lunch. You might not be able to see some friends because they’re in a different period of lunch.

For lunch you either pay for your food or bring your own lunch.

Elective/ Clothing for Fashion – This is my elective class. An elective class is a class you get to choose to take. It can be anything you want, music, chorus, art, fashion, first-aid, woodshop, anything.

Study Hall – In study hall you can do whatever you want. You can sleep, do your homework, sometimes listen to music or eat if they don’t catch you. Hahaha. xD

After that you go home! :D

You have 4 minutes passing which means you have to hurry and go to your next class. Sometimes you need to stop by your locker to get your books for the next class. I think each class is 45 minutes except lunch and homeroom, they have shorter time. Someone correct me if I’m wrong.


I apologize for the long post. I hope this was interesting for you guys and for people that are in Viet Nam and want to know what high school is like in the US. If you have other questions about high school here in the US you can ask me. :wx:

In high school each class have a specific level of difficulty. If you do well in middle school you get to be in a higher level. The scale in my school goes like this....from hard/AP/ honors to regular/easy.

AP
Honors
Accelerated/Level 1-1
Regular/ 1-2

(In special cases there is a level 3/1-3)


When you get to grade 11th or 12th you can choose to be in AP classes or they automatically put you in it. In AP classes your credit counts for college, not high school anymore. You have to maintain a certain grade to be in it, for example a B or higher.

in the first time, it's so difficult for me, becoz my english skill is not really good so, i'm like a quiet girl, shy , blablabla...however, in some months later, when my eng have been improved, i felt so much better to make coversation with the others.....

I'm heading to some top schools (which are strong at my major), it's better to locate near Stanford (where my sweetie will study for MA :p), so I can usually meet and nấu cơm for him =)) (as he made m promise).

I think you have to run marathon right away T_____T. You know, 1.1.09 is the deadline of most of the uni and college in US. I just can say good luck to you, because, actually, getting admission to US college is kinda tough stuffs and you really need luck :x.

@jennie: in the next school yr I'll be a junior :wx:. I dont know whether I have enough time and luck :&) to get admission to US college after high school graduation. Still, I'll apply at around the end of 2009, which means I have about only 1 yrs left to get preparation for every application stuff (time fuc.king limits me T____T).

If I'm unlucky :&), I'll have to take VN Uni exam and I'll surely go to The States by any costs, any means.

I dont think Boston is that boring :&( Girl, dont you know million of students just wish to get what you've got :&(. Dont be silly. Boston is one of the very big city at east coast (as i read in a book: "đại đô thị"). And dont you see, you'll have chance to go to many many outstanding colleges there. East coast is damn good at education. Ivy League itself is, oh ho ho, better than anything I can ever expect =((.

Ok my honey is studying in Korea, he'll go to the States for his Law MA next 2 yrs in Stanford, CA (do you know that school ? One of the elitest). So I'm killing myself trying to get to US too :&(.

Dear :&) My family is not rich and may be cannot afford the total fee and tuition. So my only way is Scholarship. If I get a high Scholarship, I'll apply for more finaid and negotiate for more scholarship. I have to get as much money as possible :&)

Anyway, a grantship is damn cooler :x

Hehe ^^, I'm not that good, if you're still in VN now, you'll see that many many students are much better than me. But you know: "There is a will, There is a way ;*).
